75cl bottle HKD$220
Youthful and vibrant, though it takes this teenager a while to get out of bed. Mild scent of pollen and airy lemon blossom, with the dryness of winter grass from the veld. Intensifies with bittersweet Yuzu citrus, light woody notes of cinnamon, and the lavishness of melted butter. The fruit tannin grips a linear line down the palate, the juicy acidity of limes a little broader, followed by the gentle velvet coating that is the vernacular of Chardonnay.
Family Vineyards comes from three sites, two north- and one south-facing and is the top Newton Johnson Chardonnay. Rich, honeyed and spicy, with creamy malolactic notes and orange zesty, lemony acidity. The oak is beautifully folded into the wine. Drink: 2016-20
